    russian farewell, dream by jeremy.rutman -- Dec. 24, 2023

I was playing in an orchestra. In one of the pieces most of the orchestra had a long final section where they didnt play so whole sections got up and started leaving - I guess this was a rehearsal and not a performance. I left as well with some misgivings that the conductor would be insulted. [break in dream] I was in Bat Galim possibly , in any case some sort of run-down apartment block where I think I lived. Some childhood classmates Yana and Margarita also lived there. They were going to throw a farewell of some sort and I didn't want to go since these always wound up being long sessions of boring conversation and gross russian foods I was unfamiliar with, but I didn't tell them I wasn't coming, just failed to confirm. One of the girls said she was going to try to run a business dealing with cleaning soda, the other said she would continue what sounded like a hopeless plod looking for work in the local papers. I went up to a higher floor and by chance this retiring couple said they wanted to sell their claeaning soda business. I went back down to Yana/Maragarita's flat but missed it by a floor and found a bunch of unfamiliar people a bit younger than us, whereupon it struck me how entirely replaceable our existences were, the only constant being the soviet-era apartment block that endured generation after generation of constantly shifting tenants.
